Cosmetic Dentistry Q & A

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is the field of dentistry that makes your smile beautiful. With cosmetic treatments, Dr. Parra can alter and enhance many different aspects of your smile, including the:

  • Size, shape, and color of your teeth
  • Alignment of your teeth
  • Size and shape of your gums

Cosmetic dentistry can also repair cosmetic defects in your smile, like cracks and chips in your teeth. Millennium Dental, Beatriz Parra, DDS, offers a variety of high-quality cosmetic services with safe and painless procedures.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin coverings that look just like the front side of your teeth. Dr. Parra permanently bonds them over the front of your teeth, where they effectively mask any cosmetic defects in your smile, like cracks, chips, or stains. Once in place, your veneers look just like your normal teeth, giving your smile an enhanced appearance that looks natural.

What is tooth-colored bonding?

Bonding is a painless procedure that Dr. Parra administers to fix cracked teeth, chipped teeth, or teeth that are misshapen or too widely spaced. She applies a tooth-colored material to the surface of your tooth to reshape it or fill in any cosmetic defects, then shines a curing light on it that makes it harden like your natural tooth enamel. Once cured, your tooth-colored bonding will look, feel, and function just like the rest of your teeth.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is an artificial tooth cap. They’re custom-built from an impression of your mouth, so they look, feel, and function just like your natural tooth. With a dental crown, Dr. Parra can replace a tooth that’s damaged, discolored, or otherwise unsightly.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a device that replaces a tooth that’s missing entirely from your smile. It’s a fixed prosthetic with an artificial tooth (called a pontic) that’s held in place by dental crowns fitted to the teeth adjacent to your missing teeth (your abutment teeth). A dental crown is custom-designed for your particular smile, giving you a replacement tooth that will look like it was never missing in the first place.

How do you treat gum disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection of your gum tissue that happens when plaque and tartar accumulate on your teeth. The plaque and tartar contain harmful acids and bacteria that irritate your gum tissues, eventually causing them to recede and form pockets.

Millennium Dental, Beatriz Parra DDS, treats gum disease with deep cleanings, also known as scaling and root planing. During a deep cleaning, Dr. Parra or a hygienist use special tools to clean the plaque and tartar from both above and below your gumline, then smooth down the surfaces of your tooth roots to make it more difficult for plaque and tartar to accumulate and to give your gums an easier surface to reattach to.

In order to make sure that your gums stay free of disease, you come in for more frequent maintenance cleanings after your deep cleaning. Dr. Parra recommends coming in for your maintenance cleaning every three to four months, during which she continues to remove any plaque or tartar that’s built up and makes sure that your gums stay healthy.
